Rosa californica - California Wild Rose
Deciduous shrub to 5 ft tall. Spreads by rhizome. Bears fragrant pale pink flowers in summer followed by bright red hips in fall. Hips make a nice tea. Spiny thickets makes a formidable barrier hedge and provides a safe haven for birds. Full sun along the coast to full shade inland. Moderate water. May go drought deciduous in summer without supplemental water. Tolerates clay soils, prefers loamy soil. Hardy to -10º F.
