Evergreen succulent shrub to 6 ft. Formidable down facing spines. Found in coastal sage scrub and chaparral habitats. Pretty yellow to orange hinged flowers in summer. Edible fruits, if you can get past the spines to harvest them – otherwise, leave them for the birds to enjoy. Full sun along the coast to part sun inland. Low water. Fast-draining soils. Hardy to 25º F
