Cercis occidentalis - Western Redbud

Deciduous shrub or small tree to 10 - 20 ft. Silver grey branches are exposed in winter. Fuchsia to magenta flowers usually emerge before the green heart-shaped leaves in the spring and give way to decorative seed pods in the fall. Flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. Full to part shade. Moderate water. Tolerates a wide variety of soils, including clay and alkaline soils. Hardy to 20º F when young, 10º F when mature.
