Evergreen shrub to 6 -10 ft. Showy display of flower clusters in spring, usually pale lilac, sometimes white or shades in between. Thorny branches. Great for slope retention. Naturally occurring in the mountains around Los Angeles, quintessential chaparral plant. Excellent habitat for song birds, butterflies, and insect pollinators. Full sun (with a nurse rock and some mulch) to part shade. Low water. Avoid direct summer water after the first year, but won’t mind being near an adjacent irrigated area. Tolerates many soil types. Hardy to 15° F or lower.
